Dialysing on a North Sea Island
Holiday dialysis on Terschelling
Dialysis is a treatment that needs to be continued indefinitely, also when patients are on holidays. Dialysis patients from outside the Netherlands, who wish to spend their holidays on a Dutch North Sea Island, should contact the Dialysis Centre Groningen (DCG). The DCG offers dialysis facilities on the island of Terschelling during the summer months. We will offer holiday dialysis facilities on Terschelling from May to October. The DCG is one of three independent dialysis centres in The Netherlands. Its main facilities are in the Northern City of Groningen. Slightly over 200 patients in the northern part of The Netherlands are dependent on our organisation for their regular dialysis treatment. In 2010 we are  open from 23 Mai till 16 July and from 8 August till 2 October.

Hemodialysis on Terschelling
Terschelling is a popular holiday destination and offers many possibilities for all age groups. Our dialysis sessions take place at the municipal health centre in Midsland West-Terschelling that was built in 2004. Arranging a place to stay is your own responsibility.
The VVV Terschelling (www.vvvterschelling.nl) will be able to help you in this rested. The DCG only takes care of the dialysis sessions.

Medical Responsibility remains with your own nephrologist.
The dialysis nurses from the main facility in Groningen come to Terschelling on a rotational scheme, so that there will be a dialysis nurse available in the summer period, as indicated above. There will be no nephrologist on the island. In other words, our own nephrologist remains responsible for your treatment. Therefore stable dialyses are a prerequisite for making use of our holiday facility. On the island the dialysis nurse will be available for advice on a 24 hour a day basis by way of a beeper. If any substantial problems occur she will contact your nephrologist.

Some additional dialysis information
There is one dialysis shift per day. The timing will be depend on the wishes of the holiday quests, either in the morning or in the afternoon. During the dialysis coffee/tea, cookies and instant soup will be available. Anything else to eat or drink you will have to bring yourself. We use Gambro AK-200 dialysis machines. In some cases Hepatitis B positive dialysis patients can be accommodated (limited places). Since the places can sometimes be filled at a relatively early stage, it is advisable to contact us as soon as you have secured holiday accommodation on the island. Two weeks before the start of your holidays is the latest moment you can contact us because we need some time to arrange your dialysis.
